What you actually need is an agent layer that sits above these tools, understands your team's conventions, and orchestrates across them. What you need to know: Jira's API returns ADF (Atlassian Document Format) for rich text fields, not Markdown or plain text. Your agent will need to convert between formats. What you need to know: Linear's API is opinionated by design. You can't create arbitrary custom fields or statuses — you work within Linear's model. This is actually a benefit for agents: the state space is constrained and predictable.

Notion

Notion's API is REST-based and uses block-based content. It's the most verbose of the three:

What you need to know: Notion's database pages are collections of blocks. Creating a page with properties and content requires understanding the block structure. The API is also rate-limited to 3 requests per second, which matters when your agent is bulk-creating tasks.

My recommendation: Use Linear as the primary execution tracker if you're a startup or mid-size engineering team — its API is the most pleasant to work with programmatically. Use Jira if you're in an enterprise environment with complex workflows that Linear can't model. Use Notion alongside either for product documentation, roadmaps, and stakeholder-facing reports.

What Actually Works Today vs. What's Premature

Build these now — they're reliable and valuable:

  • Task creation from Slack/messages (with human confirmation)
  • Status sync from PRs/commits to tickets
  • Sprint velocity analysis and backlog formatting
  • Weekly digest reports across platforms
  • Duplicate detection across tools

These are possible but require significant tuning:

  • Autonomous sprint planning (use as a starting point, not final answer)
  • Cross-tool task linking and dependency tracking
  • Predictive deadline estimation

Don't bother with these yet:

  • Fully autonomous prioritization (too context-dependent)
  • Natural language querying across all tools (RAG over your PM data is still flaky)
  • Automatic reassignment based on workload (political minefield)

Getting Started This Week

If you want to ship something useful in the next few days, start with the status sync agent. The webhook handler for GitHub → Jira/Linear status updates is straightforward, immediately valuable, and doesn't require complex LLM reasoning. It's pure API orchestration.

From there, add the task creation agent for Slack integration. Then sprint reporting. Build the sprint planning agent last — it's the most complex and the one where LLM judgment matters most (and where mistakes are most visible).

The key insight: the value of AI agents in project management isn't in making decisions. It's in eliminating the tedious data shuffling that eats 30-60 minutes of every project manager's day. Let the agent handle the plumbing. Let humans handle the judgment calls.
